Police have charged a 26-year-old inmate from the Hawaii Community Correctional Center following his escape Wednesday afternoon.

On Thursday evening, Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives charged Howard Hinds, also known as Kaulana Hinds and Manoa Kamau, with second-degree escape. At 1:23 p.m. Wednesday, patrol officers responded to a report of a male inmate running from the facility. At 2:05 p.m., Hinds was taken into custody without incident behind a residence on Omao Street, about 3/4 of a mile from the jail.

Hinds made his initial court appearance Friday afternoon. Hilo District Judge Harry Freitas ordered him to return for a preliminary hearing at 2 p.m. Tuesday and maintained his bail at $10,000.

Second-degree escape is a Class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison upon conviction.
